
Lee D. Bonar Jr. a Marine sergeant major and member of MCL Jones-Wolin-O’Brien Detachment 771 of Wheeling, WV, became the first serviceman honored in the state in the Hometown Heroes billboard program in Wheeling.
A ceremony to officially unveil the billboard dedicated to Sgt. Major Bonar was held Sept. 8, 2009, at the intersection of WV Route 2 and Northern Parkway Road in Wheeling.
Bonar enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on Jan. 15, 1985, in Wheeling and completed recruit training on April 18, 1985, at the MCRD in Parris Island, S.C. He served in a variety of billets throughout his career and is currently the III Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group Sergeant Major in Okinawa, Japan.
His decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal with CV/1 gold star, Combat Action Ribbon and Presidential Unit Citation.
Bonar, who flew in from Okinawa to attend the billboard dedication ceremony, is married to the former Margaret Ann Silveria of Oakland, CA, and they have two children, Adrian and Zachary.
The billboard is owned by Lamar Advertising, which is creating the Hometown Heroes billboards free of charge. According to spokesman Shane Walters, a service member from one of the United States’ various military branches will be honored on the billboard each month.
Capt. Jason Grim, 4th Marine Recruiting District Recruit Advertising Officer, and Wheeling Mayor Andy McKenzie gave remarks during the billboard presentation ceremony. The presentation and retirement of colors was made by MCL Detachment 771, while music was provided by the Wheeling Park High School Band. Also in attendance were members of the Wheeling Young Marines oganization.
